The visitors started the game well and had a first minute corner cleared before The Lockmen threatened when a ball into the box was easily dealt with. Ben Newton made a good save to push an effort away from goal on nine minutes. The Reds won a 13th minute free-kick when Eddie Wilson was chopped down. However, the youngster’s free-kick was punched clear. A minute later, Craig Sudlow curled another Willenhall free-kick just wide, this time from the left. However on 15 minutes Wood went ahead when a short back-pass from Martyn Beards was pounced on. The initial shot was blocked with Newton saving the follow up but the third attempt was deflected home as the ricochet from the keeper hit a Walsall Wood player. Walsall Wood then doubled their lead when their number eight fired into the corner. On 29 minutes a clever break by Joe Noel saw his cross cleared before the same player saw an effort blocked on the half-hour. Wilson, Noel again and skipper Paul Holden all had efforts at goal cleared as the home team tried to apply a little pressure at the end of the half.
