WILLENHALL beat a near full-strength Star side from the newly-formed Midland League in an entertaining friendly.
Both sides went close to a goal early on, Craig Sudlow nodding wide for the home side before Paul Holden and Danny Hemmings had shots blocked for the visitors.
Willenhall’s neat play continued to create chances as Sudlow and Eddie Wilson were both just off-target.
With five half-time substitutions, The Reds upped their game and two familiar faces helped to break the deadlock, Joe Noel’s run and cross teeing up Jake Morgan for a 50th minute header.
Sudlow was just wide with another header from a corner before sub Town keeper James Fryer, back for a second spell with the Lockmen, made a brilliant save to foil what seemed a certain Star equaliser.
That stop proved crucial as a deep ball from French trialist Boniface Lumumba picked out Morgan 25 yards from goal and he spun his marker to angle a fierce drive across the keeper and into the net with four minutes left.
