FULL MATCH REPORT
The Lockmen produced a fantastic performance in the snow against a Highgate team who had won their last twelve matches. With the game only pronounced playable at 7.30 pm due to the conditions, delaying the kick-off until 8pm, the home side were warming up while some of the visitors seemed more interested in getting the game called off. In the difficult conditions, The Lockmen were first to show when Tom Turner got free down the right wing on ten minutes and produced a dangerous cross that was nearly deflected into the path of the fit-again Scott Harris. United managed to scramble clear. The visitors won a corner-kick on the quarter-hour which was easily cleared before The Lockmen attacked again two minutes later. Mikey Clark produced a superb strike which ‘Gate keeper Sean Hayes managed to push behind for a corner. From the corner, Eddie Wilson’s delivery hit the inside of the post and was half cleared. The next threat came on 26 minutes when Harris saw his effort fly straight at Hayes. Seven minutes later the visitors saw a header fly high over in a rare foray without a flag being raised to halt their progress. The Reds finally broke the deadlock on 36 minutes when a cross in from the right by Clark found Matt Dorgan in space. The midfield enforcer turned striker showed commendable skill to put his foot on the ball, commit the keeper and fire into the now unguarded net. Ben Holden was finally forced into a save five minutes before the break, getting down low to save well before the visitors nearly levelled on the stroke of half-time when two stray Lockmen passes gifted possession on the edge of the area, Tom Lacey forced a superb save from Holden before his follow up corner was headed from the line.
HT WILLENHALL TOWN 1-0 HIGHGATE UNITED
Harris and Wilson both fired over in a quiet start to the second-half, the visitors constantly getting themselves trapped off-side, thus nullifying any attacking intent they had. Highgate were made to pay for this on 61 minutes when a cross was half cleared to Dorgan and his head down to skipper Paul Holden 25 yards out allowed him to hit an absolute screamer that rocketed into the roof of the net to make it 2-0 to The Lockmen. Martin Crawford then saw his effort saved by Holden before sub Harry Rickus forced a low block from Hayes at the expense of a corner on 68 minutes. The visitors saw a corner cleared off the line three minutes later before Graham Ashton produced a superb block to prevent a possible goal. The visitors then saw a free-kick wasted on 73 minutes and likewise a corner three minutes later before Holden was forced into a superb stop with his feet with four minutes remaining. In the final seconds of the ninety minutes United were awarded a free-kick which Leigh Brown curled into the top left hand corner of Holden’s goal for a consolation.
