It took penalties to separate 2nd place from 18th place in the West Midlands League last night but it was the relegation battlers that came out on top in the Final of the Birmingham Midweek Floodlight Cup. The Lockmen almost made the perfect start as Mikey Clark rattled the underside of the bar with 22 seconds on the clock. Gornal saw an effort deflected wide a couple of minutes later before Clark had three more attempts narrowly off target as Willenhall made the better start. Eddie Wilson also saw a deflected effort fly wide while at the other end Ben Holden did well to deny Tom Piggott. The second half saw Athletic hold the upper hand with Lockmen keeper Ben Holden denying them a goal on three separate occasions with brave saves at the feet of strikers. However with two minutes left Willenhall should have had a penalty when Clark was fetched down as he was about to shoot at goal from close range. The second half of extra-time saw both sides go for it, Eddie Wilson seeing his effort cleared off the line while Liam Hickman headed onto the cross-bar when unmarked a yard out as both sides sensed a winner.
The game finished on a sour note as Gornal’s Alex Dallinson saw red for a nasty two footed lunge at Toumani Sidibe which caught himjust above the ankles. Dallinson then hit the bar and Ben Holden saved Jason Chilton’s effort as Athletic missed their first two penalties whilst Lyndon Weller’s effort rattled the bar with Willenhall’s second effort. Six perfect penalties ensued, with Graham Ashton’s two pace penalty packing too much power and The Lockmen had the cup on penalties, 4-3.
Shifnal’s defeat to Sporting Khalsa mean The Lockmen are now mathematically safe from relegation going into their last four games this week.
