The Lockmen produced a superb performance to easily beat one of the pre-season title favourites.
The Peacocks were first to show with Adam Callinwood curling a second minute effort just wide. On the six minute mark former Red Chris Bladen was high and wide with his effort. Lyndon Weller then headed a corner clear two minutes later as the visitors had the best of the play early on. The Lockmen won a free-kick on half way which was cleared before Callinwood fired just over from a 25 yard free-kick. Another corner was easily cleared on 13 minutes before Dan Bryson produced a great clearance to deny Bladen after 26 minutes. Ryan Ward then attacked down the left until he was unceremoniously stopped by another former Willenhall player Luke Guy. From Eddie Willson’s delivery Mikey Clark put a header just wide. Clark then won another flag-kick after a clever run down the wing but Graham Ashton headed just wide from the Wilson kick. Danny Hemmings then fired just over on 43 minutes before Luke Guy got booked for a tackle.
The second half started with Craig Sudlow making a double save to deny the visitors, the first a fine one-handed block, before Ashton blocked a Bladen effort soon after. Willson then won another corner when his free-kick after 49 minutes was cleared behind. Clark then saw a header fly wide before a Willson free-kick was headed behind for a corner. The Lockmen had been threatening for a while and they finally broke the deadlock on 72 minutes. Sub Kieran Robinson was fouled after a twisting run and he got up to deliver a wonderful free-kick that curled inwards to the far post where Paul Holden ghosted in to plant a firm header in the corner beyond the reach of the keeper. Another sub Alex Carlin saw his shot cleared off the line as The Lockmen nearly doubled their lead. The Reds finally got the second goal cushion on 79 minutes when Alex Carlin was fetched down in the box, Matt Dove smacked home the penalty to settle the tie. The Lockmen almost got a third with six minutes remaining when Robinson produced yet another good cross on the run. However, it was just beyond the reach of Clark.
