The Lockmen were comprehensively beaten on a night when conditions dictated the style of play needed.
Sports adapted much better to soggy conditions with their quick and direct style of play and Willenhall had no answer to it ultimately. In wet and windy conditions the home side threatened first by winning a corner on four minutes, which was cleared. The Lockmen won their first corner five minutes later but home keeper Luke Stevens took under pressure. Sports took the lead with their first attack when a move down the left saw ex Willenhall captain Jamel Fuller picked out in the box and he fired across Craig Sudlow and into the far corner of the net. Sudlow then produced a brilliant save to deny Dan Westwood a goal on 14 minutes after he had been set up by Jon Letford. A minute later and Sudlow produced a comfortable save to end any danger from a corner. After 23 minutes Sudlow produced a brilliant double save from the ground to again deny the hosts a goal. Good work from Alex Carlin then forced a second Willenhall corner which flew safely to the keeper on 24 minutes. The Lockmen then lost Graham Ashton to what looked like a hip injury, Jaihon Sedgley replacing him. On the half-hour mark The Reds won a free-kick just outside the area for a late tackle, Eddie Wilson took but drilled wide. Another fine save by Sudlow denied Sports before the resulting corner was well blocked. Seven minutes before the break and The Lockmen had a good shout for a penalty for a blatant hand-ball, but nothing was spotted.
The home side had two free-kicks at the start of the half. On 47 the first was high and wide, the second on 50 minutes saw Lyndon Weller head clear. Weller was then booked a minute later. The free-kick was deflected wide for a corner. Ross Clarke was then booked for a tackle and skipper Dan Bryson followed for disagreeing with the official. Home sub Adam Cain waited patiently before putting his effort into the top corner of the net on 57 minutes. Jaihon Sedgley was booked for another soft foul and Willenhall were forced into replacing Jon Ashfall. The Lockmen saw Corey Pearce fire an inch wide of the post against his former club before Angelo Franco hit a fierce effort into the roof of the net on 63 minutes to make the game safe. Pearce then fired inches over after Sedgley had set him up.
On 72 minutes it was 4-0 to the home side as Sudlow fumbled a high shot from Fuller and it dropped into the net. Wilson saw an effort deflected wide for an unproductive corner before Sudlow made another fine save on 83 minutes. A minute later though and a looping header from fifteen yards out from Dan Westwood looped over the unfortunate Sudlow and dropped in. Sudlow then dropped a corner with five minutes to play but the shot was cleared off the line. The Reds weren’t quite finished and won a corner which was swung in brilliantly by Wilson, Shaquillie Reid did well to head behind. Clarke fired just over for the visitors on 87 minutes before Sudlow made a brilliant double save to prevent a sixth goal. Weller was then dismissed in stoppage-time for a foul.
