Willenhall Town

WMRL Premier Division Saturday 16 August @ 3:00 pm

The Lockmen held on for a deserved if hard fought win, courtesy of a wonder strike from Matt Dorgan. The Reds started well with Mikey Clark firing wide inside the first minute before the home team broke but saw their effort fly wide. Joe Noel won a corner a minute later after good footwork on the right, Tom Turner‘s corner being fired over by Andre Calder. On four minutes The Town won a free-kick in the centre-circle, the ball was pumped into the box where Dominic Richards punched weakly before eventually the ball was cleared from the danger area. Willenhall were looking bright and excellent interchange between the hardworking pair of Tony Clift and Ryan Ward saw the former slide in a dangerous cross which was eventually scrambled clear. On 14 minutes a great run from Clark saw him tee up Noel for a run and cross but again the ball was cleared. After Clark was booked for a late challenge Ward went close after another teasing ball in from the right from Noel. The hosts finally threatened and Luke Williams fired at Reds keeper Ben Holden on 23 minutes, but he saved comfortably. As play returned again to the other end, Ward and Noel combined well to force a corner on 25 minutes. Turner’s kick was half cleared before being returned back into the box where Jack Pottinger’s overhead kick rattled the bar, the closest either side would come in the opening half. Ward was then prevented from a goal-scoring opportunity when he couldn’t find the space to shoot early enough at goal and was forced away from goal and when he did get his effort off it flew harmlessly away from goal. Paul Holden then headed a dangerous Dudley corner away on 32 minutes as the home side started to come into the game and several more were defended comfortably in the next five minutes as Sports simply couldn’t find the right ball to unlock a determined defence. 5 minutes before the break Dorgan produced a brilliant cross which Richards did well to pluck out of the air at full stretch to deny a strike at goal as two players followed up. Craig Tibbetts then hit a fine overhead kick two minutes later but the ball flew to Holden in goal.

Turner’s free-kick into the box two minutes after the restart was headed behind for a fruitless corner and any chance of a threat was chalked off by a flag from the official. Sports attacked four minutes later and forced a corner of their own which was cleared. Holden denied Dominik Watson with a fine save on 52 minutes before a Willenhall clearance saw a ball over the top and the ever-willing Clift powered past the defence onto the ball only to fire over from the edge of the box. The Lockmen had another corner on 53 minutes cleared before a free-kick on 57 minutes from Ward some 35 yards out was blocked first by the wall, then a defender before being cleared upfield. Letford again fired well at goal but Holden again denied the striker on 62 minutes.

However from the clearance the match winner arrived and was it ever worth the wait?

Tom Turner headed a long ball down for Matt Dorgan to meet it with such a sweet strike it simply flew in a narrow gap over the keeper’s head as he stood on his line. As fine a 30 yard strike as you will see anywhere this season! Four minutes later and Turner fired a speculative effort wide from 30 yards. On 70 minutes Pottinger again fired in a fine effort only to screw his effort wide. The last twenty minutes saw Willenhall batten down the hatches generally and a determined defence held firm, with some forward indecision, a little luck and some fine counter-attacking that saw them hold on. The luck arrived on 72 minutes when Holden came for but dropped a ball in from the right, the ball dropped perfectly for Watson but he headed wide. Callum Foster who replaced the dangerous Noel on 70 minutes was always an outlet for a clearing ball and a dance past four players saw him tee up Ward to fire just over. Luke Williams then fired at Holden who held well under pressure. Generally it was Sports inability to make a right decision with a pass or shot that must have frustrated them as Willenhall took the points.
