Full Match report

The Lockmen conceded an unfortunate 89th minute equaliser, but were more than good enough to outplay 2nd placed Malvern Town.

The first action of the match saw Graham Ashton head over a second minute Tom Turner corner. The visitors broke well on eight minutes but the cross in from the right evaded everyone, running out for a goal kick. The home side then broke through Ryan Ward, but he was beaten to the ball and the chance disappeared. The visitors again broke down the right but again the cross drifted out of play as they struggled to get a foothold in the game. They were finding The Lockmen forwards, especially Ward a handful. As if to prove a point on 17 minutes he robbed keeper Charlie Weaver of possession in the area, with the tight angle he chose to pull back for strike partner Craig Sudlow, but the ball bobbled horribly and the effort flew wide. Willenhall won a free-kick a minute later, but again it flew well wide. Reece King headed weakly at Ben Holden from Malvern’s first corner on 21 minutes before Jack Pottinger played a ball through the defence for Ward to chase. Unfortunately the keeper won the race and cleared the danger. Ward then attacked again, but he was robbed of possession in a dangerous position on the edge of the box. The visitors hit a free-kick off target after 25 minutes and The Lockmen won a corner which drifted harmlessly behind. Malvern had a goal disallowed from a corner on the half-hour when two men charged to the far post, the first pushed Holden to the ground and the latter then headed home unchallenged. The visitors were then punished doubly when from the resultant free-kick, the ball was knocked long for Ward to again chase, this time he got there first and executed his lob perfectly from 25 yards and the ball dropped perfectly under the roof of the net. Kirk Layton then put a cross straight into Holden’s hands as they looked to reply a minute later, before Ward again beat a defender, turned into space before hitting a low drive at Weaver. Malvern won another corner on 33 minutes, which they cleared before Ward won a flag-kick which was taken by captain for the day Danny Hemmings. From his delivery Pottinger found space to rattle a post with a flashing drive before Simon Laidley’s follow-up went wide.

Pottinger was first to show for either side five minutes after the break when he won a corner after good play, Turner’s ball in was headed clear by visiting skipper Chris Allen. Malvern then won a couple of corners just before the hour, but it was poor show for all their possession in a ten minute spell. Layton was then booked for the visitors for a nasty tackle which gave Sudlow a shooting opportunity, but the finish was too high. Ashton then fired a foot over from outside the area before Ward and Sudlow did well to engineer space, Sudlow saw his initial effort blocked and when the ball ran free to Ward, he too was denied by stout defending. The Lockmen scrambled the ball clear on 81 minutes after a bout of ping pong in the box, but play was breaking down through a flurry of cards and injuries, mostly to the home side. Malvern got a scarcely deserved equaliser on 89 minutes when a long cross in from the right by Bryan Craven evaded the head of Kingsley Burrows-Fields at full stretch, and dropped for Dave Reynolds who’s effort took a nasty bobble and bounced over the hands of Holden as he raced out to block. There was still time for the visitors to hit a post deep into stoppage-time but a winner would have been nothing short of a travesty, and on reflection it was a good point for The Lockmen, though they were undoubtedly disappointed not to take a maximum haul.
