The Lockmen were ultimately overcome in this Vase game, but with steadier play may just have sprung a surprise.
A slow start saw The Lockmen threaten first when they won a corner on seven minutes. However, it was cleared away for a throw-in. Seven minutes later the home side threatened again through Sam Brook, however, his cross caught the wind and was caught by visiting keeper Sam Jones. On 18 minutes Brook then set up Corey Pearce with a neat ball forwards, however, he fired just wide. On twenty minutes a ball down the wing from Remie Birch picked out Pearce, who swung in a first time cross which the keeper did well to take at the first attempt. The visitors finally threatened on 24 minutes when Matt Owen was close to converting a cross, luckily for The Reds it was just beyond his reach. Four minutes later The Lockmen’s leading scorer Chadd Birch saw a low cross blocked, a second attempt was half cleared before a third attempt flew through to the keeper. The visitors then won a corner on 34 minutes, Kevin Renshaw saw his effort blocked and then divert onto the post. The last threat of the half saw Willenhall attack again but a goalmouth scramble was tidied up when am Jones grabbed a loose ball near to his line.
HT WILLENHALL TOWN 0-0 HAUGHMOND
Dave Howarth was first to show on 47 minutes when his attempt was blocked for a corner. Two minutes lateranother cross saw the Haughmond keeper again grab. On 53 minutes a dangerous high cross into the box was just too high for Chadd Birch to reach. Sixty seconds later and Chadd Birch was denied by a super one handed save by Sam Jones. Renshaw then hit a weak effort to Chris Bourne in the home goal on the hour as The lockmen were still generally the better team. Four minutes later and Willenhall should have had the lead when a great cross bounced off Pearce and flew wide. Two minutes later and the visitors had an undeserved lead. The lockmen were caught out by a long ball forward and Howarth buried his effort. Sixty seconds later and controversy reigned when the referee wrongly dissallowed Chadd Birch’s goal. From the re-start he charged forward, won the ball from an uninterested defender and then flicked home as he, a defender and the keeper collided. He was penalised for a push on the keeper when he had clearly collided with his own player after The lockmen striker saw his determination win the ball and touch home before any collision. This appeared to knock the stuffing out of The lockmen and a lomg ball forward on 76 minutes saw Steve Hole gain possession and lob home. On 84 minutes another ball forward again saw Hole gain possession and he fired across Bourne and home.
