The Lockmen collected an easy three points away to bottom club Gornal as they missed a hatful of chances against a spirited but limited side.
Kyle Thompson went close early on for the visitors before the home side were saved by an offside flag as two shots were blocked on the line in a scramble. Then Matt Dorgan almost got on the end of a short back-pass but ex Willenhall keeper Matt Jones grabbed the ball off his toe.The Peacocks saw a shot scrambled clear on 11 minutes before Jamal Pinnock broke from the clearance. He set up Chadd Birch who was denied by a Jones save as was Dorgan’s follow up. Mark Habbershaw and Birch again were denied and Dorgan flicked a corner wide with his head as Willenhall dominated. However, the visitors broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when Chadd Birch sent a ball through the defence for the oncoming Habbershaw to fire into the net from ten yards. Habbershaw fired wide, Tony Russon headed over and Jones was forced into two fine saves by his own defenders for Willenhall before Antony Cox missed a sitter for Gornal, getting between two defenders but firing over from close range. Kyle Thompson was wide and Habbershaw headed over and Chadd Birch was denied again by the keeper brilliantly before Chadd Birch was brought down right on the edge of the box, Habbershaw sending Jones the wrong way fom the spot on 45 minutes.
Jones continued the one man show by brilliantly lining himself across goal to touch Habbershaw’s overhead kick around the post. Thompson fired over, Dorgan headed wide and Habbershaw fired wide when played in before the defence somehow blocked Chadd Birch’s effort. Thompson then saw his header cleared off the line. Gornal broke sporadically but apart from one shot deflected wide for a corner, they saw almost every move break down around the penalty area before being forced to chase back as another attack started. Pinnock then raced down the left flank, played a quick one-two before seeing his ground shot brilliantly saved again by Jones. On 71 minutes however, the game was put to bed when a determined run and cross from Curtis Ellis set up Chadd Birch in the area. He had plenty to do but he cleverly knocked the ball one side of Jones before running around the other side, he dragged the ball first left and then right to shake off two defenders before cleverly cutting back inside to fire home.Jones then denied Chadd Birch and the same player saw a shot blocked behind. At the other end Gornal saw a free-kick deflect behind and won a couple of corners but nothing to trouble the Lockmen keeper. Ashley Stewart saw his shot saved, his free-kick fly over before Habbershaw was twice denied a hat-trick in stoppage-time, once saw a brilliant Jones save at the end of a four man move and one deflected wide before Stewart saw another effort somehow blocked on the line at the very end.
