FULL MATCH REPORT

Willenhall suffered an undeserved last second defeat at the home of their arch rivals Wednesfield. It was a far cry from early on when they completely dominated and it looked more like a case of ‘how many’ at one stage, but the home side hung in grimly and ultimately reaped a reward. The Lockmen, in their change of black and white stripes started the better with Callum Foster doing well to dig out a cross on two minutes for Danny Hemmings to flick a header into the hands of the keeper. Hemmings then did well to win a corner down the right on four minutes before Foster’s clever break on seven minutes set up Matt Dorgan thirty yards out, however, the effort lacked power and rolled comfortably for keeper Danny Thornton. The Cottagers hadn’t entered the Willenhall half until the tenth minute when they promptly took the lead. A horrible mix-up over a ball forward saw nobody clear and by the time anybody reacted the ball had trickled into the corner of the net. Harry Rickus then won a corner on 14 minutes which was taken short by Foster but the cross failed to beat the first defender and the ball was cleared. Rickus then raced down the right again shortly after setting up a shooting opportunity for Hemmings who brought a fine save from Thornton. The loose ball however, was blazed over by Rickus from close range. Ben Holden was then called into action at the other end, saving with his feet before Graham Ashton then produced a good block tackle at the expense of a 25th minute flag-kick which was cleared after it was taken by Mark Wooldridge. Dorgan then forced a corner at the other end a minute later after a good exchange of passes with Hemmings. Another followed as the visitors looked for a way back into the game with Thornton again taking well under pressure. The deserved leveller came after 28 minutes when a well flighted free-kick from the left by Andy Cahill was powerfully headed home by Craig Sudlow. Foster then fired at Thornton on the half hour as the pressure built. Thornton had luck and wits about him on 32 minutes when he so very nearly carried a curling Sudlow free-kick over his own line. Kieran Payne then did well to tackle Rickus as the tenacious midfielder shaped to strike for goal. Foster then lead The Cottager’s defence a merry dance, leaving three trailing in his wake before being halted by a late lunge. Kingsley Burrows-Fields then headed wide as The Lockmen kept their foot on the throttle. The home side finished with a rare attack but a free-kick a minute into stoppage time was floated into the hands of Holden.

HT: WEDNESFIELD 1-1 WILLENHALL TOWN

The Lockmen were back on the attack at the start of the second-half saved by the wall before the follow-up deflected to the keeper two minutes later. Another free-kick on 53 minutes then saw Paul Holden head just wide. Ben Holden then pulled off another good save to deny the home side on 63 minutes before The Cottagers attacked a minute later and again almost took the lead. Burrows-Fields cleared off the line after a short corner was nearly converted by Wednesfield sub Ashley Lawley. The Lockmen then countered again through the impressive Hemmings, this time he created space for a shot which flew just beyond the far post. Dorgan was then set up and he forced a good take from his shot low down. Ashton then produced a goal-saving tackle to prevent Wednesfield taking the lead, Lawley’s follow-up was shockingly wide from close range. Sudlow then won an important header in the box, knocking down perfectly for Dorgan, who again brought a low stop from Thornton with 11 minutes remaining. Another save from Thornton on eighty minutes before he saved another free-kick five minutes later. However, the sucker blow was landed by the home side a minute into stoppage time when Sudlow was penalised for a shove on the edge of the box in a central position. Up stepped Alan Wilkes to curl a delightful effort into Holden’s top left hand corner for a brilliant but undeserved winner.
