FULL MATCH REPORT

An ultimately heavy home defeat to AFC Bridgnorth was a harsh lesson in finishing, but poor officiating hampered The Lockmen throughout. Harry Rickus broke early on and fed Matt Dove for a deflected effort that flew to Blues keeper Chris Crook after only 38 seconds. Seconds later Matt Dorgan crossed a fine ball that fizzed across the six yard box where Jack Pottinger was fractionally away from reaching and converting at the far post. AFC broke in the third minute and with three players appearing to be stood off-side, the cross in from the right was headed home by Jamie Price. Ben Holden then punched away a fourth minute corner as The Blues attacked again. However, three minutes later The Lockmen levelled with a fine goal. A ball from half-way was pinged quickly and accurately to the right wing where Danny Hemmings controlled, cut inside his marker before hammering a strike beyond Crook and in at the far post for a fine finish. The explosive start continued and a minute later AFC re-took the lead when another ball in from the right was headed home by Tom Whitney. A break from The Reds on 12 minutes saw Rickus fire at goal from outside the box but the effort lacked direction. A good advantage from the referee saw Rickus into a shooting position again from well outside the box and an awkward bounce in front of Crook saw him manage to touch behind for a corner, which was headed clear. Another corner on 22 minutes saw Michael Clark’s dead-ball bounce on the top of the cross-bar with Crook struggling to reach. Hemmings then went on a storming run once more, only to lose the ball as he shaped to shoot. The game had to slow down after the explosive start, and on 34 minutes The Blues won and wasted a corner. However, two minutes later they stretched their advantage when the ball was given away forty yards from goal and a quick pass through the centre found Glynn Coney, he raced onto the ball and took a touch before despatching a sweet strike past the exposed Holden. The Lockmen had another flag-kick six minutes from the break when good work from the hard-working Kingsley Burrows-Fields and Craig Sudlow saw the former cross for the latter to head narrowly wide. The Lockmen were then given an advantage for a foul in their own penalty area, as Sudlow brought the ball away he was pushed to the ground and Whitney strode into the box where a fine saving tackle from Pottinger, which was somehow deemed a foul and the assistant flagged, apparently for no advantage to the away side! The visitors were then infuriated by the referee for giving a free-kick two yards outside the area when the tackle had been two yards inside the area. After Graham Ashton was booked for pointing out their incompetence, the free-kick was curled over and some sort of sanity resumed.

HT: WILLENHALL TOWN 1-3 AFC BRIDGNORTH

Willenhall had free-kicks on 53 and 55 minutes fired wide by Sudlow before a run and shot on 59 minutes from Coney for the visitors was straight at Holden in the Willenhall goal. The Lockmen saw another free-kick off target before AFC had a ‘goal’ disallowed for a debatable off-side, to the relief of the hosts. Karl Griffiths then fired across the face of the goal on 62 minutes before The Lockmen had a very good shout for a penalty ignored. A ball was then launched forward, but Holden raced from his goal to beat Bridgnorth sub Anwar Olugbon to the ball, clearing for a throw-in. A good Hemmings cross on 64 minutes found no supporting player to take advantage. The visitors finally killed the game on 74 minutes when a loose ball in the box was fired home by Mike Evans. Five minutes later and it was 5-1 to the visitors. A lightning break from Olugbon on the left saw a fierce effort brilliantly saved by Holden only to see Whitney follow up to pounce on the loose ball and net his second from close range. Three minutes later and more excellent work, this time by Dove, set up Reds sub Andre Calder, his strong low effort was well saved by the feet of Crook. A minute later and Crook was well positioned to take a free-kick from 25 yards out. Two minutes from time and Holden did brilliantly to tip over a free-kick that was taken quickly after the referee demanded the visitors wait for his whistle before playing on. From the corner injustice was doubled when Andy Hartlebury saw a fierce drive smack the face of the bar and bounce away, somehow, the assistant appeared to decide it had come off the back of the stanchion and awarded a goal. The Lockmen again showed admirable commitment by fighting to the death. Two minutes into stoppage-time and the game long gone and Burrows-Fields still chased down a long hopeful ball on the left, forcing a corner. When the ball was played in Reds skipper Paul Holden saw two fierce efforts denied a deserving second goal, the first brought a wonderful save from Crook, the latter blocked on the line by a covering defender.
