Willenhall Town

WMRL Premier Division Wednesday 24 September @ 7:45 pm

Yet another undeserved defeat for The Lockmen against their old rivals The Robins from Dudley Town. The first action of the night saw Ben Holden punch clear a third minute corner before Willenhall replied four minutes later with a flag-kick of their own. They then won another immediately as Michael Clark saw his shot deflected behind but this time it was cleared. Danny Hemmings‘ shot then drifted wide on ten minutes before a long ball forward from The Lockmen saw keeper Kyle Smith kick clear two minutes later. From The Robins’ next corner the visitors cleared and broke up field where Harry Rickus saw his 25 yarder fly straight at the keeper. Matt Dove then fired in from similar distance a minute later but his shot didn’t dip quickly enough and it went just over. On 14 minutes the industrious Rickus chased a lost cause down the right wing, however he got a foot in, won the ball back and managed to fire an effort that was a yard wide of the near post. The Lockmen attacked again on 16 minutes, this time Dove, Rickus and Matt Dorgan set up a neat interchange of passes down the right which saw Hemmings run at the full-back and force a corner. Midway through the half and again Hemmings was causing problems. This time his run and cross from the right set up Craig Sudlow, however, his low drive was blocked. The Robins finally made an appearance as an attacking force on 25 minutes when ‘keeper Holden did well to save with his legs to deny Rhys Morgan a goal. Dudley won and wasted a corner before Tom Turner won another one for the visitors, Hemmings took and an ensuing game of ping-pong produced a desperate clearance near the line at the expense of another corner. Again Hemmings took and again The Robins forced a clearance. However, from the clearance Dudley broke swiftly down their left and when the ball was fed to Morgan he ran at and defeated two tackles before firing across Holden into the far corner on 27 minutes. On the half hour The Lockmen were extremely unlucky when Clark received the ball inside right, cut inside and unleashed a beautiful strike which hit the far post and bounced to safety. From a cross into the box Rickus saw his effort blocked on the line after Smith had spilt the initial shot. For all their efforts and domination, Willenhall found themselves two down. The Robins again broke on 34 minutes down the left through Andy Arnold, when he crossed early the ball found the lurking Morgan and he steered home to double his and his team’s tally. Three minutes from the break and again The Lockmen found that all their luck was of the bad variety. Rickus let fly with an absolute screamer from well outside the box, and again the woodwork was left shaking after his effort smacked the bar. Willenhall thought they had halved the deficit seconds before the break when Dove ran past three defenders to convert from almost on the line after a scramble from a corner. Unfortunately the assistant failed to spot two men stood on the goal-line and raised her flag for supposed off-side.

The Lockmen made the perfect start to the second half when great work by Sudlow forced a corner within the first thirty seconds of the restart. When Hemmings fired over the corner, Rickus came steaming in to power home his header. The Robins then won a corner on 50 minutes after Paul Holden was forced to head off the line. Three minutes later and the home side forced another corner, however, the strike from the cross was miscued horribly wide. The game was held up for several minutes after a challenge on Rickus went unpunished. After calling for the stretcher, Rickus was able to hobble off with the assistance of two players, but managed to shake off the initial shock to continue. The Lockmen threatened on the hour after a Clark overhead kick flew just off target then Rickus succumbed to his injury on 64 minutes, Steve Nurse coming off the bench for his Willenhall debut. Three minutes later more good work down the right wing saw Hemmings cross into the box where Dorgan headed down into space only to see the defence react quickest and clear the ball to safety. Holden then made a fine one handed save on 68 minutes, fortunately the flag was up anyway and the danger was ended. A minute later and Graham Ashton saw his superb 25 yard free-kick rattle the bar for a third time as Willenhall’s luck was again bad. Seconds later Dudley had a corner which was cleared before on 71 minutes there was a long ball into the box, Holden raced out and half cleared to the wing from just inside the box. Unbelievably, and summing up Willenhall’s night as the ball dropped to Dominik Ward almost on the touch-line, he swung a boot and Holden could only watch in disbelief as the effort flew over his head and dropped perfectly inches under the bar. On 78 minutes Nurse almost marked his debut with a goal, his header being saved. Two minutes later and another header was cleared off the Dudley line as they held on. With six minutes left, Clark saw another effort deflected behind for another corner, which brought another. As the game entered the fourth minute of stoppage time, Substitute Tony Clift saw his header somehow tipped over the bar. From the resultant corner the ball was cleared from near the line as far as Clift who let fly, the ball flying inches wide. However, the whistle went and The Lockmen were left with a 3-1 score line which genuinely looked to be the other way around on chances and possession.
