A string of basic mistakes in the second-half saw The Lockmen punished heavily.
A quick break on seventy seconds saw Jordan Turton race through and net. However, within thirty seconds The Lockmen had leveled when almost from kick-off Jake Sharman hit a perfect diagonal ball out to Ryan Dillon and he flashed an effort across the keeper and in. Rob O’Brien went close on four minutes before Sharman and Dillon combined again but the latter saw his cross cleared. The home side had a sixth minute corner cleared before Jamal Jakeman was played goalwards on eight minutes but he was robbed of possession as he shaped to shoot. The visitors almost converted a corner from their left on 13 minutes but the ball evaded an onrushing player. Corey Ensor, returning to the club after four seasons hit a fierce 30 yard free-kick on 16 minutes which deflected for a corner. Declan Haire was quickly off his line to grab the ball ahead of an attacker before The Lockmen survived a penalty shout. However, on 21 minutes a tackle from Jerome Mason saw a Newport player fall over theatrically and Jamie Russell sent Haire the wrong way from the spot. Rob O’Brien was robbed in the act of shooting on 29 minutes and Newport sprung quickly, helped by the lack of a flag Rob Millington was allowed to race clear but shoot wide. With both sides swapping corners and free-kicks it was 36 minutes before Newport extended their lead. Another sharp break saw Liam Bould score.
Newport saw a corner headed home on 46 minutes to make it 4-1 before Jake Sharman reduced the arrears on 48 minutes when a Lockmen free-kick was headed on to mason, he stabbed goalwards and Sharman supplied the final touch. Newport won a corner on 21 which was headed behind and the next one was scrambled clear. However, on 53 minutes The Lockmen couldn’t handle a quick break by Turton and this time Bould supplied the final touch. Ensor went close on 54 minutes, picking up a quick throw in before curling a beauty inches wide. Dillon won a corner on 63 minutes but Jakeman’s effort was at the keeper. On 70 minutes the game was over for The Lockmen when a free-kick in from the right was flicked on and a follow up header looped over Haire. A quick break through the middle on 77 minutes saw Newport sub Steve Handley supply the final shot for 7-2. Five minutes later the visitors passed their way through the defence and Makhan Rai finished emphatically. On 86 minute an unmarked Rob Millington headed home the ninth and final goal after the home defence couldn’t cope with the speed of the attack.
