The Lockmen produced a battling performance against pre-season title favourites Newport, only to be denied by a lucky goal.
Liam Dunphy went close twice in the first ten minutes for the visitors before the home side took the lead on 14 minutes. Amari Shaw produced an inch perfect knock down for Damian Wood to lob home perfectly for the lead. Tow minutes later and the visitors were awarded a penalty when Addi Allen was adjudged to have fouled. However, Rob Millington saw his penalty saved and the rebound brilliantly blocked by Chris Adamson. Adamson went on to make three more top quality saves before Liam Cox suffered a nasty shin injury in a poor tackle from Ryan Millington, the defender ending up in casualty with a stud hole in his shin exposing the bone. The Neport player lucky that the referee didn’t see it as an over the ball challenge.
Tom Lawton and Nathan Griffiths put some dangerous balls into the box early in the second half before Newport equalised with a lucky goal. Colum Dunphy hit a hopeful ball five yards inside the Willenhall half and Adamson appeared to slip as he scrambled back, the ball just dropping under the crossbar on the hour. Six minutes later and Tom Bradley was unmarked at the far post to finish off a smart left wing cross. Shaw saw an effort blocked on 68 minutes and Griffiths fired wide shortly after. Grifffiths then saw a cleared for another corner, this one being scrambled off the Newport line.
