WMRL Division One Saturday 3 November @ 3:00 pm

The Lockmen stormed to their first victory of the season but will be disappointed with the final score-line, missing a hatful of chances, including a a one-sided game.

The first serious test of the visitor’s defence ended in the game’s opening goal.  Gurpreet Singh broke forcefully down the right wing and when he cut inside, his low cross was badly missed by a defender and found its way to Amari Shaw and he fired high into the roof of the net. Gurpreet Singh then went on another foray forward in the thirteenth minute when he bulldozed down the middle of the pitch, only to be chopped down thirty yards out by Will Drewfield, who was booked for his troubles.  Whilst sorting out the free-kick, Ian Leon was substituted after he had just collided with Chris Adamson, Mitch Delamere went in goal and starting keeper Danny Hickling went up front.  When play eventually restarted with a free-kick, Shaw curled a fine effort towards Delamere’s top right-hand corner but did brilliantly to claw the ball out, the rebound was blocked on the line before the ball was cleared behind for a corner.  Nathan Derrick then broke on nineteen minutes but his cross was too deep to cause danger.  Three minutes later the same player again drove down the right flank, this time he cut inside, stormed into the box but blasted into the side-netting.  Tom Rayson then fired another thirty yard effort over after 26 minutes before Shaw threaded a fine ball through the defence for Adonijah Allen to fire at Delamere.  Five minutes later, an astute pass out wide from Shaw to Derrick saw the youngster fire over an inviting cross for Allen to head at the keeper.  With nine minutes of the half remaining Rayson fed Allen who in turn played Steve Stearn into a good position wide on the left, his cross picked out Shaw who had continued his run and he fired at the Juniors keeper, he curled the rebound just over. Rayson again put Stearn away on the left on 38 minutes, his delivery picked out Derrick who also curled over the crossbar.  With a minute remaining, Tom Lawton played another free-kick into the box, however, it was headed back out to him and from his second attempt, the ball was scrambled behind the goal.

With the wind now behind The Lockmen, Derrick tried an ambitious lob from distance which was not far off the mark on 48 minutes, a start that set the tone for the rest of the game.  The visitors had certainly started the second-half better, Toby Gray forced a good save from Adamson on 51 minutes.  A minute later and The Reds forced a corner, from which Connor Fellows, the home skipper, sent a fine header just over.  However, on 54 minutes The Lockmen doubled their lead from an unlikely source.  With Juniors caught offside, goalkeeper Adamson took a free-kick from the edge of his own penalty box and promptly hammered the ball upfield to see the ball bounce wickedly over the head of the unfortunate Delamere and into.the roof of the net.  A minute later Rayson fired over before Shaw’s powerful run and shot saw the visiting keeper grab the ball at the second attempt.  With 58 minutes gone a long Adamson ball forward caused all kinds of trouble with two shots blocked on the line and another rattle the underside of the bar before Rayson hammered into the roof of the net.  On the hour a break from Derrick saw him forced to play the ball wide and from Derome Cummins’ pull-back, Derrick fired over.  Five minutes later and it was game over.  Another fine cross from Shaw from the right saw Tom Lawton head home, the assistant flagging his header as over the line before the ball was scrambled clear and then hammered into the roof of the net.  Four minutes later and it got worse for Telford as Drewfield produced a fine sliding tackle to deny a fifth goal, only for the player to slide onto the ball with his arm.  The visitors will feel justice was done when Delamere made a fine save from Stearn’s penalty on 70 minutes, for added injury, substitute Damian Wood fired the lose ball inches beyond the far post.  With eleven minutes to play the visitors got a fine goal back when poor defensive work saw Hickling break down the right cut inside and far across Adamson into the far corner of the net.  Another substitute, Ben Brown should have netted on 84 minutes, his first effort was blocked but his follow up was brilliantly saved by Delamere’s right hand, substitute Dilpreet Singh then saw a third attempt deflected behind. A minute later the visitors had a penalty shout dismissed by the referee Dale Jones fired inches over from the cross.  The keeper then made another fine one-handed save on 87 minutes to again deny Brown, Derrick saw his follow up blocked for a corner.  In stoppage-time The Lockmen saw Shaw’s effort saved, Damian Wood also saw his shot blocked before yet another stunning block by Delamere prevented Brown denied yet again.  A Juniors defender then lobbed onto his own cross bar as the game finished, leaving those present to ponder the last time they saw a game when both starting keepers finished on the goal scorers list.
